I wasn't sure where to post this so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I am going to be holding a posting competition and was wondering what would be better to do.

    1. The members who reaches XXX posts first win
    2. The members with the highest post count when we reach X,XXX posts wins.

I'm stuck on which to pick. Give the first 3 who reach XXX the prizes or give the 3 highest posting members when we reach a certain amount of posts the prizes?

Well I have kept the monetary prizes as I think it would benefit the members more if they can buy what they want with the money.

I will go with this; 1. The members who reaches XXX posts first win

Make sure, you make number of posts not too low so that it won't be easy competition.

The reason for me not choosing option 2; The members with the highest post count when we reach X,XXX posts wins is because I have seen few forums not being able to carry out the activity and It will need all the members to be active to make targeted posts count.

When you give someone opportunity to do it by himself, he can do much posts but make sure you count the quality posts. It will motivate others too.

Thank you for the input. I have set the competition so that the highest posting members by the time we reach x,xxx amount of posts win. I have also set it so that the competition won't end for another couple of thousand posts, which I think is enough time and will give more members the opportunity to join in.

I would greatly appreciate further input on this if anyone would like to share their thoughts.

I think your approach is better. With the other approach, you could get one member who rushes to post a huge number that completely dominates the forum. A forum is supposed to be about community, not about one member.

I think the second one will attract more people to the contest.
