Could someone please enlighten me, as i'm still fairly new to web design.

What exactly does a no follow link mean? Does it mean the search engines wont follow the link? Or does it mean if I put an ad' on a site and it was a 'no follow' that I wouldn't be able to determine on our google analytics page where that traffic came from?

    Jonathan.

Adding a no follow tag to a link indicates to the search engines that they should not use the link as a basis for assigning a higher rank or authority to the site linked to. Many blog owners add those tags to their blogs to help reduce the amount of comment spam they receive, because spammers are less attracted to posting links when they know that the no-follow tag will be applied to those links. You might find this article on Wikipedia helpful.

Search engines, particularly Google, don't approve of sites that sell links to pass on their Page Rank to the link purchaser. One way the site owner can get around this is by specifying that they apply no-follow tags to the links purchased. That way they can sell the links based on their advertising value rather than on the principle of passing on Page Rank and hence sell links without incurring a penalty from the search engines.

Does that clarify it for you or do you have further questions?

    Thanks Fergal,

So for example would a 'no follow' advertisment stop the referral site from showing in google analytics?

No, it shouldn't do that, it should not affect your referral stats in any way. Basically search engines view a link to a site as a vote of confidence in that site and an indication that the site should rank in their search engine results. When the no follow tag is applied, it really acts as an instruction to the search engine, not to consider that link as a vote of confidence in the site being linked to.

For example, links under youtube videos are "no-follow", which means they dont have much SEO power

Only thing not pointed out is that NOFOLLOW is still typically counted by search engines. Not to the same degree as DOFOLLOW but for sure NOFOLLOW links make a difference.

Good point CloptonCapital, Google have recently announced that they will give weight to no-follow links posted on social networking sites such as Twitter, when those links are posted by people they consider to have good authority.

A do-follow link on a page shares its PR value whereas a no follow link has no share in the page's PR value, as simple as that.

I'm also confused about no follow and do follow. They say that no follow is still important in SEO but many say to avoid no follow links.

Both are important for SEO, the only different is the link juice. Do follow pass link juice to another site, no follow does not pass PR juice.

Well that's new. Can you point me where you read that article, fergal. I'm not that much updated you see. This is the first time I heard about it and I would love to know more why Google want's to weigh in NoFollow links when they already are ignoring them for the past few years.

Common mistakes SEOs make is ignoring NoFollow links. Mainly because they nofollow helps promote traffic and giving Google and other search engines the impression that it is a Natural Link.

No follow means search engine will not crawl your link.It is a value that can be assigned to the rel attribute of an HTML a element , that a hyperlink should not influence the link target ranking in the search engine.

A nofollow link is a link that is included on a webpage using standard html markup but includes an attribute to prevent passing link juice or reputation to the destination page. This type of link does not improve the link target search engine ranking.
