Well I don't really know that much about what SEO is. I looked here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization and it says its just how you get more traffic to the site. Is this all it really is? I feel like its more than just that from reading some threads.

SEO stands of Search Engine Optimization; in layman's terms, it looks at how you can optimize your website on the Internet so it is search engine friendly in order to increase your site's visibility on search engines.

Consider if you made a new website and you want it to get noticed by Google. Google doesn't necessarily come by itself; you need to persuade it to come and index/record your website so it can then rank you on search engines for certain keywords that you would naturally promote.

I wouldn't say it's about getting traffic to your site; it's more getting your site noticed on search engines. Part of optimizing your site is through on site and off site. On site looks at ways you can improve or optimize your website so it can deliver the best results when Googlebot (eg.) comes to your website. Off site looks at how you can promote your links and improve rankings through concepts such as Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and general marketing of your site.

SEO is generally your free method of trying to get up the rankings. There are also paid methods, eg. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) which has paid inclusion with SEO. The best way to get started is to read Google's SEO Starter Guide and article on Google Webmaster Central.

BAF also has an excellent list which can be found here: Featured Sales & Marketing + Online Promotion & SEO Threads

The article you referenced begins,"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines". In essence, that's all SEO is. As David mentioned, SEO is about getting your site noticed. The article goes on to say, "In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users." Although this is the general idea, it is important to note that SEO, as mentioned above, is about "improving the visibility of a website", and will work on any keyword phrase related to any business regardless of the amount of searches a keyword phrase gets. A properly run SEO campaign, therefore, should have three steps.
The first step is Keyword Analysis. You don't want to go after highly competitive keyword phrases, because you would be spending too much time and effort, and/or money. You would either have no time to run your business, or would go bankrupt trying to get ranked. Also, if a website that has very little, if any, rankings suddenly starts getting ranked for highly competitive phrases, it would look suspicious. You also don't want to pursue phrases that get little traffic because, although it would work, you wouldn't be increasing your traffic. The best phrases would be somewhere in the middle.
The second step is the step that gave SEO it's name, and is sometimes called on-page optimization. This is where your site is analyzed to find any errors that might be holding it back. Some of these may be "black-hat" techniques, such as "keyword stuffing" or "shadow domains", that are designed to try to trick the search engines. Others may simply be errors made by a designer who doesn't know how to integrate marketing into design, such as missing or duplicate meta-tags, duplicate content, or broken links. Editing of, or adding to, the content of a website can also optimize your website for the phrases you are pursuing.
The third step is Strategic Inbound Linking. Links are what the search engines look for, and each link to your website is considered a vote for, or endorsement of, your site. The more links you have, the higher you will rank. Of course, they have to be the right type of links. It's not enough to buy thousands of links from a link farm, and then "throw them against the wall to see what sticks". It's also not enough to simply get links only from high PR sites. Just like with the keyword phrases, if a website that has very little links, if any, suddenly starts getting links from only high PR sites, it will look suspicious. A diversified linking strategy will include editorial links from a variety of sites, such as blogs, social bookmarking sites, press releases, etc.
Even after all that, remember, SEO is designed to increase the visibilty of your website. You must also make the site visitor friendly, so that when people come to your site, they will stick around, and perhaps even purchase your product or service.

Search engine optimization is the process through which you rank your site on the top of search results against your targeted keywords.
For example you are doing the business of wholesale clothing and you have the website through which people can buy your products. Here search engines plays the very important role to capture the targeted customers to increase your sales. Like, I want to buy some wholesale clothes i will go to google and write "buy wholesale clothing", "wholesale clothing", "cheap wholesale clothing" and every person who wants to purchase the wholesale clothing is likely to write these keywords so they will be your targeted keywords and if you get succeeded to rank your website on the top against these keywords you will be likely to make more sales

SEO Is an unpaid source of getting traffic from search engines. I think the easiest way of getting traffic is to build link with social sites, top social media site like twitter and digg.

The first thing you need to know is not to worry about PR. If your SEO is done properly, your website will rise in the rankings for the keyword phrases you are targeting, no matter what your PR is.
Rather than hijack someone else's thread, PM me with your website URL and contact info, and I'll see what I can do to help you.

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users
