The URL is important because of multiple reasons. Yes, the first thing you think about is about typing manually the URL. But that's not only how URL is important for marketing.

How many times URL are saw? Many times. Inside search results, search engines highlights when a keyword corresponds to one word of the URL. This brings more attention to the website.

When you share an URL on IM or social platforms, you do not get a nice title to the link like it was before in the web, where you could define what text is a link. Now, the link is the text. So, people read links and probably influences if they will read it or not, because if it explains correctly the page and its purpose, they will be more tempted to click.

Finally, the address bar is always on screen. Sometimes, the title of the page is not in view, or it is cut, or so on. The URL is always in front of you when you navigate on Desktop and on any device with enough screen to show it. So it also implicitly helps to describe the page to the visitor and feels nicer and cleaner when the URL is clear rather than with a lot of random characters.

While I must admit that your web address should be short, easy to remember and "relevant" your meta description is what will give you an edge over your competitors.

Search engines always display a short description of your site so their users know what they will get should they visit your site. Creating a great meta description is what most certainly will improve your CTR rates.

In addition, it is very important that the keywords in the page title and URL are matching. If not the search engines may push your listing down the search results. I have seen this happen to my blog many times.

That's true, but don't forget that giving a short description will be sometimes less relevant than showing the keyword highlights. If the description doesn't talk about the detail or the topic you are looking for, while your article would answer that question somehow, then the keyword highlights would play a better job. Some search engines purposely ignore these descriptions for this reason I guess.

But I agree on the rest about the web address being short. But the path must be relevant as well, meaning that for example, even for dynamically made pages, you should think about using paths, like folders, even if they don't exist, they exists for users and search engines, that's what matters.

It is very necessary to purchase that domain name that can easily be recalled. Branded domains are useful for this purpose but keyword based or personal name based domains are quite difficult to remember. Most of persons also purchase domains with some influencing keywords for making them easily memorable. Short urls are easy to remember but long urls make anybody confusing as keywords are written in it without space, and sometimes online user types them in wrong way and go to the other website url by mistake.

Use hyphens to separate words when necessary for readability. They should not use underscores, spaces, or any other characters to separate words. Overuse of hyphens in URLs can be seen as spammy, so it’s best to use caution and limit hyphen use in URLs when possible.
