It is strongly advised to use Anti Virus because it protects your computer you don't know when a virus may bring your computer down.

The cyber attacks and threats are increasing day by day. If you are using internet which you must be then you need to have some protection form malware and viruses that spread online. Your computer might be affected and you would not even realise. Later on, you may face issues. It is better to have a good anti-virus installed.

The reason your system might be slow could be that the AV might be scanning files. So you can schedule scans so your system does not become slow unexpectedly.

It doesn't slow down computers. It assessed the computer's security risk. So far, you evaded different viruses. But someday, your computer will be infected and no antivirus will remove the virus. Not only virus but online threats that you won't even notice.

Your operating system will not work for long if you don`t have an antivirus installed

That is good. Make sure you get a reliable one and update it from time to time.

There are few good free anti virus like AVG, Avira. Try them.

To your original question. It is not necessary to run system with anti virus.

Install and run linux. You do not need anti virus :)

It just depends on your usage.if you dont go for downloads then virus probability goes to mininum.
But then also antivirus should be there because we go for using various pendrives, cds dvds and virus loves such sources to enter the computer.

You HAVE to have some type of antivirus ir you're going to be surfing the web. When you least expect it is when you will find yourself dealing with a virus. Trust me, Ive had a terrible experience with viruses.

It's a good advice to use an antivirus if you are plugging in and out an external device or you are using internet.

I think antivirus should be in running state in your system. There are many reasons that computer is being protected by USB viruses, Internet viruses, Trojan horse and any moreā€¦

I think , we must have antivirus softwer. Some viruses softwer delete, some no , but we must have them. For me AVG Free 2013 is best antivirus now because it is free and not need to much ram resources

This is like asking, do you really think reading newspapers are good. Its a matter of personal choice rather than anything else. if you want to secure your computer against the odds of virus, then you better run one. However, if you are going to use very less internet and onlly visit trusted sites, then not having one wont be a matter, provided you screen your USB and CDs very closely.

Needless to say, having one wont hurt, but it isnt an absolute necessity.
