A spammer is a member of a forum community that is not a person. It`s account has been created by a robot or a program in order to advertise product or service which are illegal, Like illegal drugs.

Unfortunately I know a lot about them, we get a huge amount of them trying to sign up here on Business Advice Forum and we are constantly trying to stay one step ahead of them. When we update our security features it keeps them out for a while, then the spammers learn how to bypass the most recent updates and we have to update and tweak again. Business forums appear to be particularly attractive to spammers and it's a constant battle to keep them out.

One thing I will say is that there are also human spammers, these are people who make pointless posts just to promote their links on a forum. Sometimes they are doing it for their own site and very often they are being paid to do it for others.

Spambots and even human spammers can be a massive pain in the backside if you don't know how to handle them very well. Business and gambling forums seem to be the biggest targets for spambots because of the sheer value of signature links in those kinds of forums. Keywords are key.

Human spammers are, of course, much harder to deal with than spambots. Spambots normally take a few days or a few weeks to break your latest security features, whereas human spammers can work around your security within seconds.

Absolutely, spambots are easier to catch as they follow a specific pattern again. eg, as for a blog, they'll post a comment totally out of context or something that is very vague. Humans being smarter usually add a twist which makes it harder to catch them.

    For example:
Let us take a blog post about domains, this is how spambots and human spammers will respond.

Spambots: Nice post. You can get nice soccer shoes from so and so place.

Human: I always buy domain from name.com. Just like my site which sells soccer shoes for cheap.

An anti-spam measure will surely be able to detect the spambot activity where as second one is harder to catch even for a human.

That's a great example Divyun and it demonstrates clearly how both types of spammers operate here on Business Advice Forum. As I've become more experienced with forums I can spot the human spammers much quicker and I take a harder line and remove their posts quicker than I did in the past.

I have been doing this for past three or more years and with time you only get better.

I remember the first spam comment on my blog. I approved a few comments only to realize a month later that it was some spammer only trying to get back links!!
Usually you do not need to register to post a comment on a blog which makes the problem worse!

Divyun, do you use Akismet on your blog? It seems to be one of the best defences against blog spam.

Every forum i make i always end up with spammers registering, it's such a hastle. Promoting stupid viagra products and porn and all the other crap you just don't want near your forum or website. All you can do is take all the measures you can in stopping automated sign up scripts from working in your forum(ReCAPTCHA, etc) and hope for the best, and of course keep an eye for the obvious spam account names.

We don't use Akismet here Divyun, however we do have other forms of spam protection installed on the forum, including ReCAPTCHA as mentioned by karoshio.

SEOs are not spammers. they help other businesses to build popularity online using those targeted keywords.

Google is not against SEO. SEO is helpful to the google bot because good SEO means the bot can find new content faster on your site and Google loves new content.
SEO is also helpful because the titles, descriptions look beautiful in the google serps.
What Google hates is people who manipulate their ranking algorithms. People who build false backlinks to make their site look more reputable than it is.
I have heard on the grapevine that there is a monster algorithm change coming that will give an even bigger slap to link spammers than they have seen before.
I use SEO, but I am more interested in converting eyeballs than dancing for the google bot.
There is more to the internet than Google. I would say that 90% of the conversions/traffic come from other sites anyway.

Spammers collect email addresses from chatrooms, websites, customer lists, newsgroups, and viruses which harvest users' address books, and are sold to other spammers. They also use a practice known as “email appending” or "epending" in which they use known information about their target (such as a postal address) to search for the target's email address. and Much of spam is sent to invalid email addresses.

Those thread with 0 reply is easier to recognise as spam, when I saw those kind of message, I will report it. Spamming is goes for quantity link back, by the time admin caught them, those posting already sitting at the forum for sometime, they benefit with instant result in SERP.

I think if you don't understand how to handle them very well. Business and wagering forums appear to be the large-scale goals for spambots because of the sheer worth of signature connections in those types of forums.
