As far as I know, Google counts www and none www as one domain.

They are considered as duplicates but you can easily fix them by adding a canonical tag to those pages.

You are wrong. To fix www version with non www, you should do proper 301 (permanent) Redirection.

    301 redirection is required.

"There is no difference, in the sense that you can set either one up. "

www and non-www are duplicates of each other. You can fix this by redirect your non-preferred domain to your preferred domain using 301 redirects.

There is no big difference between them, you can actually choose whatever format you want depending on your mood. No technical issues or whatever. The thing is that people sometimes forget about giving Google the signal as to what domain they prefer.

    Look Mark T.'s posted links.

Best is to use one, and that's the www one. Many people type sites with www by default.
But how about those who link to you without www? Then make a redirect.
Redirect your non-www to your www URL so that all traffic will go to a single domain URL.

In server term, non WWW is naked domain, which is not a standard format, so majority website stick WWW. As for SEO term, it doesn't matter, as long as we keep the link consistent to WWW or non WWW, it work fine for SEO.

Using www and non-www doesn't affect your rankings. But before you started SEO on your site, you have to decide if you're going to use www or non-www and stick on what you choose. Also do canonical linking so if you're not using www and your visitor use www, there will still be sent to your website.

If you register a site, IIRC, both www and non-www will be recorded at Google Webmaster Tools.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
