What about asking your members to chose which publicly quoted stock, share or commodity they would purchase and then pick the winner based on which member picked the best investment?

Alternatively most helpful member contests are always great.

Yes, I think Fergal's idea was a pretty good one. It could benefit the person entering even if they don't even win which can inspire people to enter. good luck with it. :)

Referral contests can work very well to build activity and publicity for your forum. However, you do need to be careful, because referral contests can result in false and spam accounts being set up just so that the referrer can get the credit and increase their chances of winning. It would be helpful to introduce a minimum post requirement, e.g. don't count a new member as a referral unless that member has made ten good quality posts on your forum.

Referrals contests is good to get potential active member and increase the post quantity in your forum. However, you gotta be very careful of the spamming. Many forum have fail to get good member after the referrals contests, some of them even spend hundreds on it. To implement referrals contests, i will suggest not only set the minimum post (as per Fergal mentioned - make it like 10 quality posts to be considered as "referrals", but also set the staying times, the member need to be active within 7 days.

On the other hand, i will suggest to implement contests something like top 5 best thread on the months, top 5 poster on the month etc. This actually encourage member to make more quality posts and attract potential quality member
