    Can anyone please recommend a good beginners book on computer hardware?

    I'd like to achieve the following;

    1. A basic understanding of how computers work and what they do
    2. A knowledge of what the various parts are, when I open a PC
    3. Fully understand computer specs, so that I can pick the best model, when buying a PC
    4. An understanding of computer memory, e.g. hard drives and RAM
    5. An understanding of computer processors.
    It would be a bonus if the book also covered topics such as networking, servers, IP's etc, but this is not essential.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for that link Sahil, it is very helpful. Have you by any chance read any of those hardware books?

    One of the main review writers on my site, William Ford, Jr., is a published author of two books that fit almost exactly with what you are looking for. I have not read either of them, but I would recommend both of those books based on the fact that I know William very well and I know how much knowledge he has about computers.

    Both are available from Amazon:
    I Need a Computer...What Now?: The Complete Guide for First-Time Computer Buyers

    Personal Computer Upgrades Demystified: The Laymans Guide to Upgrading Computer Components

    Thanks for those suggestions jwhitakr. The books look great. I've actually sourced two books a short introductory ebook and the CompTia A+ Certification book. I'll see how I get on with these before I purchase anything else.

    Thanks for those great links pekerjamini, they are very useful articles that provide a good overview of subject areas, where my book goes into too much detail for my liking. I've bookmarked and will read them in detail, later today.

    sajjad.axe you might find this How PCs Work tutorial helpful. You could also try some searches on YouTube. Is there any particular topic that you are looking for tutorials on?

    This is quite an old thread, but thanks for that Ashwani Kataria :) I will keep it in mind, if I need books on the subject again.
