For local networking, is joining a chamber of commerce worth it? If so, how do you network at a chamber to take maximum advantage of the opportunities?

It's hit and miss. It depends on the Chamber, their membership and activity, but also their terms for networking. I find that effective Chambers take advantage of any and every networking opportunity they can get a hold of and fight, fight, fight for their members, region and/or charter cause at the time. If it's more of a small club of heavy hitters in the area, then it may not be worth your time. However if it's a large cluster of active members working together to build the community (competitors and all working together), then definitely get involved. There's more to Chambers than networking and business growth. Like the BAF forum here, you can learn a LOT about surviving (especially the local market in your area). Safety in numbers!
