If I were to put a clickable image that would go to another site(sorry, I don't know the correct term for this. Basically <a href="URL of target site"><img src="photo URL"></a> ) would google be able to detect the link? So If I were to put a banner advertisement on another site, would google index the link?

Yes they would. A link is a link. This is why people use the ALT attribute in their images though, so it will be easily indexed and for the text they put in the ALT.

They would index any links placed anywhere. They visit every possible links on the web just they show the ones which match there quality criteria.

They won't index any links anywhere. They won't index your link if it's placed on a link farm or if it's using the nofollow attribute.

If the link is with nofollow attribute then they won't give it a PR value but they would include the link in index.

Backlinks is what helps you get indexed. Enough nofollow links and you'll be sandboxed.

No, by submitting a sitemap in Google or any other Search Engine can easily get you indexed in 24 to 48 hours. You always don't need a Backlink to get anything indexed. Backlinks are used to get your site ranked up higher in the SERPs.

Nope, not at all. You never get sandboxed for getting links from the other sites. Google also knows that if they allow such things then there can be negative campaigns to get competitors site down.

Only thing, I have experienced is your site get's sandboxed when you post duplicate content on a fresh new built site.

Just so you know I agree with sahil as you don't need backlinks to be indexed in search engines

I'm sure Jerlene knows that, but I'm pretty sure he/she is just enforcing that backlinks are probably the best way to get indexed.

Basically, what Google or any other SEs says is that when you start out a website you just need to create quality and unique content which people reads and they would link to that content if they likes it. So, they would never be suggesting that you need links first to get indexed in there system.
