    Hi Folks,

Can somebody help me understand the business model of these two popular websites: StumbleUpon and StackOverflow.

From reading basic articles that I found online, it seems that both operate on user generated content. What I can't understand is the reward factor. What benefit does the user get - the one who generates the content. In the case of StumbleUpon, it would be the person who tags the web page and for StackOverflow it will be the user who answers the question.

In every business shouldn't there be some kind of reward factor? So, for the above two websites, what is it that entertains/motivates the user to keep posting/answering questions?

Any advice would be very helpful.

    thanks

Let take StackOverflow ..there are many reason why user answer there ...
1st:- They not only share the knowledge but even gain the knowledge
2nd:- As StackOverflow is Programming Q&A site they learn new things in programming
    3rd:- They make great friends
4th:- They even get business deals over there
5th:- They even get business ideas
This are just few reason why user engage in this site ..Every user will have his own reason to join

    StumbleUpon
Majority of users who use StumbleUpon are one who are involved blogging , seo , sem , social media marketing or any other online stuff here we can clearly see users have there own benefit join this site

StumbleUpon and StackOverflow are not new ideas..there were many similar site before them and even now there are many website which are similar to them
The different between them is that they are..that StumbleUpon and StackOverflow are well executed and well promoted

    @realitybites

    Thanks for replying!

I totally agree with your comments. For both web sites, the subscriber and the publisher will benefit and thereby fulfilling the core principle of any business model - REWARD.

What do you mean by this last statement..."that StumbleUpon and StackOverflow are well executed and well promoted"? Can you please expand on that? Did they follow any well-known pattern to promote their product (website, in this case)?

    thanks

    Let take StackOverflow
The concept behind StackOverflow is not new there were and there are many Q&A site today including forum which deal with programming . But they are getting lot of attention from quality media and VC ..the reason behind this the people behind StackOverflow , they know what they should do and what not to do
Every successful business have there own success story and in every successful business they follow few important stuff like
    1:- Quality of there product
    2:- User satisfaction
    3:- Well Promoted

Many things are same with StumbleUpon but they had new idea ..which they executed well
