Wordpress is awesome! Especially when you add plugins. What is your top free WP plugin?

The list below are my essential plugins that I use on every site:

    • Akismet (Stops Spam dead)
    • GoCodes (Redirects traffic via a clean URL)
    • Google XML Sitemaps (For SEO)
    • OnlyWire Multi Autosubmitter (Submits to multiple OnlyWire accts)
    • SEO Booster Lite (Lists inbound search terms on your site)
    • WP O Matic (Autoblogging)

If anyone wants advice or tips on any of those I am happy to help.

Please list your favourite free plugin and what it does.

    :)

Another simple but highly effective plugin is "ThankmeLater". Its not strictly SEO, but it does pull visitors back very reliably. When I installed it my repeat traffic went up over 300%.

ThankmeLater works simply by sending a delayed thank you (3-5 days random) to the person who left a comment on your blog. By that time they have probably forgotten they were there so they generally come back when prompted, often just to see what other comments have been left after theirs.

    To name a few favourites:
    • ShadowBox JS - a fantastic plug-in that allows authors to link their images to file location and when clicked opens up a lightbox style overlay image viewer.
    • FeedBurner FeedSmith - Redirects your feed (yourblog.com/feed or similar) to a FeedBurner account, allowing more control over your subscribers.
    • Disqus Comment System - Incredible commenting system, which allows easy access for your readers should they have social profiles or a Disqus account.
    • SexyBookmarks - Displays bookmark icons on your blog but with a sexy catch.
    • WP-Syntax - Allows code (PHP, HTML, CSS etc.) to be displayed correctly and effectively within posts.
    • WPtouch - Enables a mobile optimised template for portable browsers (allows Adsense integration).

Wordpress is a lifesaver. I only wish I had started with it earlier. Very easy to use and there are thousands of free templates and themes around.

I started a site (built in Wordpress incidentaly!) to help my girlfriend set up her site because I got tired of explaining it. Now my friends use it too and find it very helpful so I hope you can too. Its at http://www.linkbuildingtools.co.uk.

There is a good "Getting Started" article on there that I think explains how to get started on Wordpress much better than any other I read. See Getting started with a Wordpress website

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks bmwsedan!

Anyone else? I'm surprised by the low response rate to this thread. Wordpress is such a great platform. Easy to use, adaptable, and most of all free!

If you havent used Wordpress before buy a new domain, get some cheap or free hosting, and install Wordpress. Like me, you'll never look back.

If anyone gets stuck I am happy to help (or see the guide mentioned in the previous response).

It is very useful thread here, I have to say. Thank you a lot. I am building my first website with the Real Estate template from TemplateMonster web service, and I will need some good plugins for it soon. Your links will be very helpful for me

Whenever You install a new plugin, make sure to check it before install try to see its reviews. Because some WordPress plugins developer builds a plugins with a back door in it. So once it installs on your WordPress then they trigger the plugin to hack your website.

Even better, don't install a plugin unless you really really need it.

Many plugins are poorly configured and will results in a drop in the Google PageSpeed score. As this is a ranking signal adding multiple plugins can affect your ranking, especially on mobile searches.

As I said my last post: why are these the best wordpress plugins? What makes them any better than the alternatives?

The list you posted as specialist plugins that only have relevance if your site requires those features. In most cases they aren't needed.

I see everyone mentioning SEO, but what about Security?

Every WordPress website should have at least one plugin for Security. WordFence is a great choice to look into, and free from WordPress.org. One note...disable the Live View option. It will just add extra data to your tables which is not needed.

OK, so lets consider your list:
1.SEO Plugin - Which one? There are loads of them to choose from.
2.Social Sharing Plugin - Again, which one? And if you don't want shares this isn't even required
3.Contact Form Plugin - Which one?
4.Backup Plugin - Which one? Or better still, backup at the server.
5.Security Plugin - Which one and for what reason?
6.Page Builder Plugin - NO! Never use a plugin for this, they will load up your page with all sorts of shortcodes and coding crud.
7.Image Optimization Plugins - Far better to optimise before uploading
8.Related Posts Plugin - only if you want related posts.
    9.Caching Plugin
    - Nope, never use a caching plugin. They can slow your site right down. You are better off optimising your site - fewer plugins, a theme with minimal features and unhooking everything you don't need (including the emoji JS)
