What in your opinion is the best free anti-virus software?

I have a paid version of AVG, which is due for renewal. I'd like to find a free software that can give me full protection.

    Thanks!

http://www.avast.com/ You can download free for home edition...
I have used avast in the past & was satisfied with it But because it slows down my system during startup little bit...Now I have switched over to NOD32 Esset Smart Security..I have no idea whether it is a free software or not.. But till now it had been satisfactory..!!!

The free version of AVG stood up well in a PC magazine group test of AV products last year. Did better than some paid for brands.

I like AVG too. I used the free version of it for years before switching to a paid one. I used it in conjunction with Spybot - Search and Destroy and they both did great.

Clam works well too, but is my second choice to AVG free.

I use Avast too but I encountered some problems when playing some MMORPG online games in the past. I actually thought of buying a paid Anti-virus to get better protection but it seems that AVG is very popular. Might want to try AVG first before buying.

By the way, is the free AVG from this link - http://free.avg.com/ ?

Yes Nazreen, you can get the free version through that link.

Is the free version of AVG good enough? Is it worth upgrading to the paid version of AVG?

I have used AVG Free on my systems for years, I still do on my 4 XP computers. My main computer is a linux system, so I use CLAM for my trojan protection.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and suggestions. I was going to run with the free version of AVG, but got a little concerned when I saw that the free version doesn't provide email spam protection or a firewall. So I've decided to go with a 30 day free trial of Eset Smart Security. If it runs well I'll most probably purchase it.

I think it must have changed over the years then Fergal because I'm sure AVG had email protection before. Keep us posted on Eset please, I'm not familiar with that one and would like to hear feedback on it. I'm always looking for good freebies, even trial ones. :)

Kay & Fergal, AVG v.8 has email scanning but no firewall. Zone alarm has a firewall version that is free.

I am currently also using Esset Smart Security..It runs fine except that it consider some files as potential threat even when they are not of that nature like my PENDRIVE..autorun file is always displayed as virus..I have try to solve the problem many times through Esset but it is of no use....
May be it is because ..the way we students are in habit of using every software available on net free by hook or by crook..!!!~!!1!!!!!!~~~;)

Eset Smart Security has been running fine for me, the last few days. My computer appears to be running a little faster, now that I have AVG un-installed, so I'll most probably stick with Eset.

One of the advantages of Esset antivirus softwares is that it doesn'y makes your computer slower as compared to other renowned softwares like Norton especially...Yeah my computer also runs fast & gives better performance than before after installation of the software..!!:)

My computer is flooded with Virus called - Virus Identified worm- Downadup...Although it is detected by all antivirus software , none of them could actually eliminate it or delete it....
Can anybody have any idea of healing it ...
The location shown in the scanning result is under Network service\local settings\temporary internet files.. but I couldn't even find the location despite all those hard attempts..

I have give esset security, avg antivirus, avast all a try..but none of them could able to delete it...!!!:(
