What are the most effective and most popular e-commerce tools? I think the shopping cart kind of scares people away but it actually works and opens the possibility of buying something when browsing. I also think that probably advertising in every available site is not that positive for any product.

Welcome to Business Advice Forum, Andrea.

PayPal is very effective for selling online if you are looking for a relatively straight forward solution. OsCommerce is a very popular open source, e-commerce solution that provides you with much more functionality and ability to customise your online store.

Does that answer your question or do you require further info?

If you want to accept credit cards, you can use either paypal or 2checkout this are the best options that you can avail if you are selling online.

Andrea, have you considered some of the options posted here?

Do you have a particular service in mind, that you are considering using?

If you're planning on setting up an online store then a shopping cart is a must. You might also want to go with a shipping calculator so that your customers can already compute the shipping costs.

By the way, I don't believe that a shopping cart will scare away your visitors because not all sites with a shopping cart are online stores and it's still up to the visitor if he/she wants to buy or not. Our library in Singapore also has an e-library where you can borrow a maximum of 4 ebooks at a time and it also uses the shopping cart to check out the ebooks.

You could also consider more comprehensive solutions such as Yahoo Store or even eBay.
