I know it is usually difficult to communicate well with people from other cultures but certainly there are main pointers help overcome this problem. Could you tell me some of them, please?

I try to take the Stephen Covey approach, seek first to understand. Try to understand where the other person is coming from and the message they are communicating.

Make a big effort to listen and also be conscious of body language. Sometimes it helps if you explain to the other person that you have difficulty understanding them and ask them to speak a little slower.

I think a lot of people shy away from being honest and saying when they don't understand what someone means. Best to try make that clear so the person knows you're trying your best to figure it out. A good old pen and paper can be handy where you can draw a picture if you're both really struggling.

Good tip Kay, I must try and improve my drawing skills :) I'm afraid my drawings wouldn't mean much to anyone, regardless of what language they speak.

Communicate well with people from other cultures

    1. Accept and understand the differences:
    2. Learn about their culture:
    3. Learn about their religion or faith:
    4. Use suitable and effective non verbal language:
    5. Ask to know more:

check out my blog for more details if you want

Well, if you are really serious to learn how you can win friends and influence people.
Then get yourself this book, from Dale Carnegie, How To Win Friends And Influence People.
I just borrowed this book from the library, but I haven't read it yet.
It is a great book and a best seller.
There is no way it will be a best seller if it is not a great book right?
I guess it might help you.
    Hope this helps.

I have to agree with Fergal. The first thing we need to do is to understand the other person's culture and religion. For example, in some culture, pointing with a finger is acceptable but for others, it's considered an insult.

We might not always have a pen and paper with us when talking to people so I think a better way would be to use body or some simple sign language.
