According to my knowledge you have to search the links on your site and remove spamming links. Never use Black hat techniques. Remove more advertisement.
And do SEO techniques in proper way.

I am gradually recovering from the update. I didn't do anything though but add more contents to my site and limit the meta tag to it to three. I also took down some of the backlinks I've built thru article directories. I change some of the anchor text too.

Just remove the bad link from your site and work on those sites which are authority sites in Google as well better than your site.

    FROM SEOMOZ.ORG:

    Penguin — April 24, 2012

After weeks of speculation about an "Over-optimization penalty", Google finally rolled out the "Webspam Update", which was soon after dubbed "Penguin." Penguin adjusted a number of spam factors, including keyword stuffing, and impacted an estimated 3.1% of English queries.

Another step to reward high-quality sites (Google)

Remember that Penguin was about over-optimization and the like. So one of my suggestions is to audit your websites and checked for pages that seems to be "over-optimized" and conduct optimizations and tweaks on all of your pages if possible.

    Thanks,
    Mark T

The main reason is low quality links on the site and low quality links linking back to the site. You can read learn more about the Penguin update and read stories from real people affected by the update here. Being able to understand what went wrong is the first step to helping bring your site back to life, and I think you will find that recovering from a Penguin attack is a bit less strenuous than recovering from a Panda attack.
