    Uprising in spam

I have noticed in the past couple of weeks the site has been getting more and more spam, I am not sure if it is because the site is getting more active but I think that we need to try and prevent some of the spam from happening. I am not sure what precautions you have but I think we could look into getting some more protection. But that is just my .02 cents.

Hi noreturn, thanks for your feedback. We are working harder and harder to remove spam from the forum. If you see any spam posts please report them, we will remove the spam and warn the relevant member.

A suggestion: http://stopforumspam.com/contributions get the vbulletin mod, and a stopforumspam.com API key.
I contribute by adding spammers everyday and so do other webmasters. i use the mod in microshout.com and the results are Impressive!
If you need any help, ask me via PM anything ;-)

The best way to fight spam is for all users to be watchful and click on the triangle with the exclamation point in the bottom bar of each post. A mod can then delete the post and warn or, if appropriate, ban the spammer.

Obviously, different people have different views of spam. Some, like posts that are cut and pastes of other posts, are clearly abusing the forum. Others, like opening several silly off-topic threads that have nothing to do with business, may be considered by some to be OK. Personally, I don't mind an established member of a forum occasionally creating an off-topic thread to discuss a particular point, but when someone comes here and his first post is something like "Who is your favorite actor," that is not a community member, that is a spammer.

Another form of spam is when someone joins and within 20 minutes adds 15 two or three words posts like "Thanks for the post" or "Great information". It is annoying because it looks like something useful may have been added to a thread you are following, so you waste time looking at the thread only to see some throw-away comment.

Thanks Thanoz, we actually use the "Spam-O-Matic by GlowHost.com (vB 4.0+)" mod listed on that page. It is very helpful and without it we would see a lot more spam on the site.

I have stopped spammers in my forum by having a security question before the registration but still human spammers are unstoppable.

You are right that you can't stop human spammers from spamming, but you can delete their posts and threads and ban them, sending them elsewhere to inflict their pain.

Click those triangles so the mods can nip the human spammers in the bud!

I have seen this make a huge difference on the forum. The only trick to do this is make the questions not so hard that regular people can't answer them because I have seen that done before.

We do have a human verification question on our registration page, thanks for the suggestion. It works to help keep out bots, however as others say we still have human spammers getting through.

I don't if I am right or wrong, but my suggestion is we can delete the irrelevant threads that is not related to BAF topics and warn the member about this whomsoever is posting such threads. If still spamming is done by the same member then we can ban the user. I think this will help to avoid the spamming.

I didn't know this Fergal. I'll do my part and report them if/when I see them!

Hopefully the increase in activity means you're more visible and doing well.

Thanks Denise, the more posts that are reported the easier it is for us to keep the forum spam free.

You can report suspect posts on BAF by clicking the triangle shaped image at the bottom of the relevant post. The image below shows the button to click.

Thanks rudradhar, that's more or less what we do, but we do sometimes miss things, hence we ask for members help with reporting posts.

Ya I always try to report them when I can because I know it helps a lot. But I am not sure what you did but it seems to be working pretty good. So keep it up! Thanks for jumping on the issue.
