It sounds easy, but it's not. Our company has a much bigger marketing budget for ecommerce than brick and mortar store. Yes, there are ways you can advertise for free, and we utilize as much of those opportunities as we can, but we really have to pay to get the high volume traffic that we need. By comparison, our ecommerce marketing budget is 20% of gross revenue vs. brick and mortar store of 3.2% gross revenue. Labor and rent is more for a B&M store (assuming the same total revenue as selling products online), but total overhead is about the same. Then take into consideration that competition is a lot tougher online, our gross margins are a lot lower online than B&M because we have to keep our prices lower.
Of course it depends on what you're selling, but ecommerce is not the elixir to financial independence that so many people believe. There are few exceptions, but it usually takes money to make money, and most businesses, especially online businesses, don't make enough money to be sustainable as someone's primary source of income.
