In some cases, websites will see substantial upward movement in 3 months, and in others, websites have reached page one in less than 3 months. Others may take 4, 5, or even 6 months, depending on the industry, and, as vishal23 mentioned, the competitiveness of the keywords. Unlike Alexander, however, I do not think anyone should wait a year to see results - If no results are achieved in 6 months, something is wrong. If you are doing the SEO yourself, you might want to seriously consider hiring someone. If you already hired someone, and you are not seeing any results after 6 months, fire them.
As Alexander and others have mentioned, SEO is a continuous process. Once you start, and achieve your goal, there will always be someone who wants to be where you are. Plus , if you stop, Google will notice you are apparently no longer as popular as you once were, and your rankings will drop.

Within 6 months to see the result is too long actually, and as you mentioned that you "cant see the result after a year", this only happen if you are doing a bad job or do it in the wrong way. If what you mean is in the top 3 pages, then it can be happen.
By the way, generally you should see the result within couple of week, at least you can see your keyword being indexed (although it listed very far from the first page), and you should able to see the improvement of the ranking time to time if you are doing it in the right way
