    why are boats and sail boats named after a woman?

    all boats probably but they are mostly named after a woman like princesses Mary and etc.. why are they named after a woman?

    i've just met a guy who owns a sail boat named carrie

    Maybe it's the same reason why the line, "There she blows", always assume that it's a female whale.

    he said he bought it with that name already. so as those cars, they usually address it as "she"

    I also notice this one,all of the boat here in our place also named after a woman.Do you know why?

    Some people think it's because boat in some languages is feminine. Or it could simply be because a captain would have a 'relationship' with his boat, and didn't want to do this with something called dave or roger.

    Actually, boat is feminine in all languages, that's why a car is a 'she' also. Essentially they are defined in language in most countries as feminine if they can carry someone, so I believe. (like pregnant women)
