Email is definitely the preferred way to go in an online business. If you really want to go all out and develop a strong relationship with your clients, you could always trying calling them via phone or having a video chat with them via something like Skype.

It depends on what kind of communication. It is fine to use email for general communication but not in the urgent case.
For the urgent case, you can also use email but can't just wait for reply, must call them up directly after sending the email.
Basically, there are many way to communicate, just choose one or more suit to both party and provide the highest effectiveness

Don't forget there's also Skype. This has been especially useful for overseas international communications that require more than just emails.

instant massage or instant chat is one of the best way for fast communication. However, i always summarize the content after the communication and email to my client to avoid any misunderstanding or overlook issue

Communication is of critical importance during the early stages of the client process. At this time you will need to get to know the client’s business as well as possible. You’ll want to understand the products and services that they offer, their corporate culture, and what makes them unique to their customers. Additionally, you should get a solid understanding of their customers and what they will be looking for when they arrive at the website. It’s also important to understand the client’s specific goals for the website, what they wish to improve (if it’s a re-design) and what they need to get out of the site.

    Thanks

I generally don't like using chats for business communications. Too much typing within a short amount of time and sometimes people want to initiate chats when I'm busy. If communications is in real time, I would prefer Skype or telephone.

If it's international, there are people who can't really speak English fluently so most of them rely on chats.

When I deal in business, satisfy customer is the first objective. It sames happen on communication, not what I prefer but all based on customer preference. Email, instant chat or phone communication are all welcome if customer request.

    Hi,
In this fast moving age, there are several ways to communicate with your client/customers. E-mail is good and fast way to promote your business but I would like to prefer direct communication with customer. The best source or medium that yo can choose is skype. Skype has brought up a great change in online marketing trend by direct video conferencing with people. It provides you more chances to reduce your risk while communicating or contacting with any person.

Skype will be a problem to those who don't have headsets or having problems on speaking English fluently.

Basically you are right if considering the effectiveness of the communication. However, all the communication media have own advantage and disadvantage. I can only say use the most suitable media according to the need.
For example, Direct communication is good but when it come to final decision making, many items might be pending, supplier or customer may need to open internal meeting before give the answer, and PIC might miss out some point after the phone communication.
Email can actually overcome this problem but the communication is not as fast as phone

I believe that the best communication when communicating to a client is through direct approach this way all of your question will be answered immediately. Unlike Email you will wait until the recipient read your Email.

Again, there are disadvantage and disadvantage. Direct communication is fast but it might lack of organize compare to email. It is bad if your client/customer are not making down the down during the communication.

In my opinion, all kinds of communication forms have their advantages and disadvantages. Email and telephone is of course most efficient for urgent matters. Yet, in some business branches a personal conversation can have better effects in the long run because it creates a closer and more binding relationship to clients for example.
