Your formula for success yesterday can be the cause of your failure today.
This is something that is very hard for people to accept. You would often hear people say that five or ten years ago their business was booming and the talk of the town but now they just don't understand why their business is failing. The reason for this is that they were left behind by the times. In every business, it's important to keep up to date and be able to adapt to the changing times. Businesses must decide to make a change - to re-educate themselves. We must make today and the future an important part of our business philosophy!
Just imagine if you own a business selling typewriters or pagers today. Of course, your business will definitely fail!

I wish I had thought of making this thread.
Very good point Nazreen. Continuing education is a must do, keeping yourself up to date on new equipment, marketing tactics, and fixes for the old equipment, methods, and tactics.

Better luck next time pendelton :)
Anyway, re-education is very important especially in this time and age - the internet age. The world wide web keeps on growing at a very fast pace and a couple million of new websites are being setup each day. So now the greatest challenge, if you're a webmaster or an internet marketer, is to adapt to this ever increasing cyberspace.
New technologies and industries are also coming out in the internet. SEO Marketing is one example. If customers don't find your site in the internet, they'll definitely find your competitors. This is where a new marketing industry appeared - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Marketing.

I remember when I first started using the internet, HTML was THE language with javascript just getting its footing. The blink tag was the neatest thing then.
Now look at the number of languages.

I guess business also involves good timing. When mobile phones first became polyphonic, there were a lot of websites that sprung up for selling and downloading of ringing tones. If you setup a ringtones website today, it will also fail because there are already a lot of these websites today and no longer in hot demand.
A good advice when setting up a business is to make sure that it's still the "in" thing before even considering it.

You would have to have some very special ring tones before you could make it, no doubts there.
One thing to remember is that there is a market for everything, it is just the number of people that would by any certain product that is the variable. If your selected item only has a few hundred people, out of the millions online, you had better be the best in marketing, and be willing to have a lot of items for such small target audiences.
I know quite a number of older people that still use typewriters, so there is still a market, although, it shrinks daily.

This is a very important point. When you are in business you need to know what is going on in the marketplace, if you want to stay in business. If you own a traditional bricks and mortar business you cannot afford to ignore the Internet.
You need to be conscious of changing demographics, for example in Ireland we have had a huge influx of non-national workers in recent years, which has significantly changed the demographics of the marketplace. For example these new immigrants rented lots of houses, which in itself was a major spur to the house building industry.
It is important to keep up to date with current affairs and developments in your own industry by reading trade press, listening to the news and attending trade shows and networking events etc.

Speaking of Current Affairs, circulation of all newspapers have also declined with the coming of the internet. Most people I know already reads the news online. It's only the older generation that still holds on their newspapers. Might we also be seeing the end of newspapers in this internet age?

Nazreen, that hurt man, I still hold a newspaper. ;)
pyzapy, there is nothing, except the death of your physical body, that is 100%, but I think Nazreen's comment is pretty close to the 100% mark. Your business vision and mission may never change, but the methods used may change from the old door to door visits to sitting at home and using the internet.

pyzapy, I do agree that vision and your mission are important in reaching your business goals. I'm not denying that fact. Can you give us a more detailed explanation as to why you disagree with the ideas/statements of this thread?

I still read newspapers myself, I find it much easier on the eyes to read from paper than to read from a computer screen. Amazon's Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FI73MA/ref=amb_link_6750302_2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=gateway-center-column&pf_rd_r=0Y0W1MPGG8NZBKMEF6V3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=392460501&pf_rd_i=507846) might go some way to change that.

Regarding reading on paper I have to say, that I still prefer reading long texts on paper because of my eyes. Also a book is flexible. You can take it to a park and read there.
Recently I started to prefer online news, as I realized, that many newspaper write ****. Especially the whole Tibet thing showed that printed newspaper prefer to exaggerate and partly just report wrong things. Online I can find news sources which are pretty independent, it's hard to find such kind of thing on paper these days.

What's in store for newspapers in the future is anyone's guess. Some already have online versions for their articles but the Amazon Kindle might really be the next big thing. We might be seeing the media and authors taking advantage of Wireless Reading Devices and witness the extinction of newspapers and books in the near future.
