They are certainly words that grab attention. One problem with them however, is that they are overused. I get loads of spam emails and see loads of spammy links with these types of words and phrased. Unfortunately this has resulted in me associating these types of phrases with spam.
The post does make me realise how powerful the word "new" is. I know that when I see something advertised as "new" it genrally grabs my attention as it is always great to learn and see "new" things, like the explorers you mentioned.

It is unfortunately you are right, spammers did grab a hold of them. Which shows they work, still, even a little. The context has to be there for this to work.
I just had a realisation hit me. You have also should try to be aware of your target audiences national location. Word usages, even in the same language, will have a vastly different response.
In the Reseller thread Fergal mentions schemes, which, on this side of the little pond is interchangeable with scams.

I agree. They are words in forums that will anyways get the attention. However yes they are overused. You see many titles like that on products everywhere.
The truth is that they have been used so much, and with such low quality products they are producing low quality sales.

A lot of people actually already made it big in the internet by using these "attention grabbing" headlines to market their products. Some of them include words like "money", "secrets", etc but the best I think is the word "FREE". This is the single, most powerful marketing marketing word in my opinion. People are like in a hypnotized state and more often than not, will click on your product ads when they see the word FREE. What can I say... all people like freebies!
I'll give an example of a site selling rights to several ebooks that I came upon a few weeks back.
- I saw the site advertising "FREE!!! Best way to make money online" or something like that...
- When you click on their ad, you are redirected to a site about success stories of people who tried their product and earned lots of $$$. There might also be images of their bank accounts in the site.
- At the bottom of the page, there will be another "Download this FREE newsletter now...". Notice the word "FREE" again.
- When you've downloaded their FREE newletter and read it, you'd just see a lot of these attention-grabbing words like "limited time only" , "amazing secrets", "FREE 24/7 customer support", etc.
- At the end, this guy is just selling the rights for repackaged how-to ebooks for a limited time only for $25 and that it was originally sold for $99 or something...
Well, a lot of these are mostly scams but notice that these scammers are at the top when it comes to marketing and all because of the single, most powerful marketing word out there - FREE!!!. We can also learn from them on how to better market our legit businesses hahaha. But don't scam, ok?
