For me the two huge major advancements in our time have been the Internet and cloning. Cloning is confined to the scientific community at present but I'm sure the time will come when this amazing scientific breakdown will find business applications.
The Internet is a fascinating enabler of communication, business and research. No one on this community needs an explanation on that one.

yes, internet is something great!
but, cloning... although has many benefits for us (humans :) ), when will it be available for public (=business) is doubtful!

1) DMOZ.org ... wish i had made an open directory project first.
Now straggling to improve mine one but i still am not popular enough.
2) Hungerlink.org Well, that's Fergal's website but i liked his idea. I wish i had the funds and the idea before him:D Nah, kidding, since i liked his effort i support him!
3) Blogsvine, a blogs & new blog posts directory indexing. Damn, they are so new and they are reaching #100k (and under soon) in very little time! Definitely, marketing experts :D
Wish i did something like this myself!
That's for me ;)

Google is I think the most remarkable success story in the internet. Who would know that a very simple search site could now be one of the biggest thing online? Google is still selected as the number 1 search and portal site and now earning ga-zillions of dollars. The word google is now even used as a verb like "I'll google it" and listed in all dictionaries.

I agree with nazreen, google is the best. Most of the members are referred to your site by google. I also think that social bookmarkings is a good way too !!

I would have to say vBulletin. Honestly, I really did not think they would do that well against phpBB when I first heard of them, but now they are the most elite forum system ever!

There are two business ideas that really amazed me. First, of course, is the Google adsense. I have been using the internet for many, many years but I did not realize that we can make money out of it not until last April. I never thought that I can start a business with a very small investment. This is quite a breakthrough. Another thing is shopping online. Who would have thought that we can purchase almost anything through the internet?

Yes Google Adsense definitely opened up the possibility of earning money online for many people, with very little money to invest in a new business.
It is amazing how most things can now be purchased online from the comfort of your own home. Many goods and services are also sold much cheaper online than at your local store.

Ebay is a shocker to me. I think ONLINE auction is weird. I have been to lots of real life auctions. You know, the guy calling at the bids, people standing around shouting out numbers. lol.
I remember back in 2000, I was attending a local wrestling match, one of the guys, an aquaintance of my escort, asked me if I do Ebay much. I was like UMMM.. no, that has to be a big sham.. lol

I read a few years ago that there were about 100,000 people making their living off Ebay. I'm sure that it's a great number now. Ebay has also worked with craft people in developing countries to help them sell their products direct to consumers in the West and thus obtain better prices. Ebay is another excellent example of a company that has empowered people with little investment capital available to become self employed.

Ilove.com could be a great dating site. What about the simple words? Google really has dominated the market with everything

ilove.com - what an excellent, short and brandable dot com domain. The domain alone has got to be worth a small fortune. I notice that their site appears to only cater for non-English speaking European countries. The site could have a huge following if they marketed their services to English speaking countries, especially the US.

The greatest innovation that has come along in my opinion, is the touch screen smart phone. With it you have everything you need in the palm of your hand, A phone, the internet for searching, email, gps. If you get one with a reliable service to back it up, you're all set.

Not to mention a camera, your calendar / schedule, radio and an MP3 player.

Speaking of phones, I think that Skype (http://www.skype.com) is one of the best innovations in the communication industry. With Skype, you can chat with other people from almost any part of the world. You can also make free pc-to-pc calls. The latest developments are the paid PC-to-phone calls and I also heard that they will be introducing Skype to the latest PSP soon.
There's also another company - Jaxtr (http://www.jaxtr.com), that claims that you can make your phone link to the PC and the PC will call another phone as long as that other phone is registered in Jaxtr. My sister in law in the U.S. said that this is now very popular there. The problem is that I can't seem to make it work here in Singapore.

Jaxtr is a very exciting and innovative service. It combines using the Internet to make cheap calls with the concept of social networking - how cool is that? Using Jaxtr you can make cheap telephone contact with people from around the world with similar interests to you, with the security of not having to share your telephone number.

Thanks for the Jaxtr tip, Nazreen, that's new to me. Back to original topic, one that shocks- MySpace! Who would have thought that would have been so huge? Ugh, I hate it but then am probably showing my age there.
Biggest advances, got to agree with what's already stated - the Net and within that also, online shopping and banking. Come to that, PayPal as well. I'd never have imagined they'd be so warmly embraced without people being scared to death of handing over sensitive financial information online.

Jaxtr seems like the old P2P programs that allowed you to call, although the receiver did not need to be online for the call to go through. It used to be free a mere 9 years ago.
Magic Jack is another one that hooks to you PC and allows you to call other numbers not in the Magic Jack network. My wife's friend in Ohio calls our Vonage phone all too often.
