I operate a writing business, and I have found networking through local and online writers' groups to be a valuable source of new business. Do you participate in any groups or associations with an eye towards making contacts? If so, what networking situations have worked the best for you.

I think that having a Yahoo! group could be beneficial if you're trying to run a business network. I haven't really tried it but from looking at it, it seems to be rather helpful.

If you run a business that you want to promote locally you might want to join you local Chamber of Commerce. These organisations can provide an excellent means to meet and network with other business people in your geographic area. Their networking events can be useful to learn from the real life experiences of other business people.

As fergal said,
You can get promote your website locally using a myspace also.
My Computer teacher has a myspace for his online business. He gets a large amount of people adding him and buying his books. (he writes hundred page books on Microsoft products) So get a myspace, its good.

I think yahoo groups and also google groups are helpful. These days orkut and mysoace are emerging as new trends of marketting but I doubt their life span.
