How do one go about creating an auction website? Any legal concepts to consider and so on? Might be interested in creating one but am afraid i'll be infringing the law(Competition law) and so on..

"Think big, Start Small".. that should be your approach for every biz. Creating an auction site like ebay, takes lots of investment, time as well as efforts.

Competition is every where. At least when you start, you should not worry about it. If you are so concerned, try consulting your legal advisor.

Yes, in such issues, the following points should be considered:
1. you must be damn serious about your project.
2. do an analysis of your funds and funds required.
3. seek a legal advisor's (web) opinion on the matter.
the third point should be done in detail, that is research around on net to find such laws etc and reads the policies of existing sites (ebay) and then note down points you may need to ask the advisor!

ripified have you any plans on the software that you will use to run the website - will you have it custom built or will you buy a script to run it?

As has already been suggested you should get some professional legal advice on the legalities of it.

there are many auction scripts available, select one where the developers are working hard and has a promising future.

I think Ebay will never be knocked off their throne...Its really hard to start and be successful in this area of business. But good luck nonetheless.
