Some directories are popular and will drive traffic (very few though), others are nothing more than a 'backlink factory' with little or no traffic from them (most of these often carry little or no PR benefits due to their very nature, hence the common mantra of "directories are a waste of time").

Getting a page rank benefit (so a boost to your SERP) and getting 'traffic' are mutually exclusive. You can get a link which provides a great PR boost but drives zero traffic (although the effect of the PR increase could help drive more traffic through higher organic listings, why the two are often used interchangeably), or you can get a backlink which does little/nothing for your PR but does drive relevant traffic to your site.

"Google is not giving importance to directories" is a subjective thing. Some directories carry weight or drive traffic, some (or most) do not. As a general rule of thumb, the more difficult it is to get listed in a directory the more benefit it 'might' carry (e.g. if you're listed on a page with 100's of other OBLs it's obviously going to carry little benefit while if you're listed in a targeted niche directory it has far more potential - see the videos linked below for a little more background on what SE's consider when looking at directories [e.g. editorial value added]). To put the whole thing in context, when is the last time you used a directory to find a site? I wouldn't worry too much about 'having' to go out and get listed.

Having said that, Google have always had a very close link with DMOZ. Up until relatively recently, they showed DMOZ catogeries as part of their result page and still speak about it in beneficial terms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rej2TkVEehg). They also used to mention directory submissions on their webmaster guidelines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pu1YWcIh04), but found it was leading to a misunderstandings of the importance.

Can it help? Yes. Is it a big deal? Not really.

The effect of your site being added to low PR directories will be very small in terms of the PR passed on to your site. If a directory homepage has low PR, chances are that its internal pages will have even lower PR and pass very little of this on to your site. However, it's generally no harm to be linked from these sites and it can help the search engines to find and index your site.

Google don't give as much weight to links coming from directories as they did in the past. However, I believe that it is unlikely that Google would penalise you because there is a link to your site from a directory. Generally Google penalise sites because of the pages they link to, rather than for the sites that link to them. Perhaps some of our more experienced SEO members will give a more in-depth reply.

There are also lots of free ones there. Perhaps you could focus on adding your site to those first and then evaluating how effective they have been. Once you learn what works and what doesn't for your site, you will be in a better position to know if it is worth paying for inclusion. Yahoo directory is the only one that I can think of at the moment, where I have paid for submission.

It is a lot of money and only lasts for a year - the one think I would say is, if you are targeting a broad keyword which is high competitive, the Yahoo Directory Listing will add an extra amount of authority which will help.

Hi amir100, same descriptions to various directories don't help. One should submit unique descriptions while submitting to directories. Also, one should check the IP addresses as there are multiple directories hosted on same server.
