Is it wise to buy such a majestic software for small business who just needs it for brochures, pamphlets and posters???
If not, care to share some top notch image editing softwares that are free??

It is always wise to keep your costs as low as possible when starting out in business. The Design and printing of brochures etc. might be better outsourced to a local graphics / print company, unless this service is in some way related to the core of your business. Outsourcing might actually save you money and if you do it right you should have better quality brochures in the end.

Fergal, I would never trust, or want, them to design the thing for me, maybe spruce it up if mine looked rough.

Depends what your business is. If you only need to make a single poster. Use GIMP. However if you are going to be some sort of commision designer, get Photoshop. There is no other option. :)

Any designer who as made enough money would buy Photoshop. I have been suggested GIMP before. Only because I haden't the money for Photoshop.

I just love GIMP, I had PS a while ago. Ver 5.x was the last I had, and will never use it again.
