If you want to open food busines, firstly you must have knowledge about your food business. If you dont have a knowledge its hard to you to run the business. You must at least the basic knowledge about the food.

Bill, if you have now knowledge of it do not go in to it. The nice thing about the food business is that it will always be there, so, you can put that project on the back burner and learn about it.
Start with what you know and expand your knowledge base as time progresses.

One very important aspect to starting a business in the food industry is the whole area of health regulation. Thankfully, health regulations are very tight for companies in the food industry. You need to learn these and make sure that you comply with them before you set up. The cost of compliance in terms of equipment and implementing procedures can be very high and you need to factor these costs into your business plan.

Fergal, that is a great point. Dealing with the health department is always an interesting thing, according to my friends that own restaurants.
Bill, what are you starting? A site, a print magazine, a newsletter?

You do realize that a small food store is a family run business because of the hours of operation. It is definitely not a 9 to 5 job. Try 80 hours a week.

I have never looked into a "Food Business" before. However I am guessing first you will need a "area/place/building" where you have a licence to be able to sell food there. Before you are actually allowed to start.
Also a hygiene licence or something like that. Someone checks if your kitchen let's say is clean enough for you to be able to serve food to customers.

I think,he must be planning to start a hotel or something like that.I suggest you to learn some good knowledge about it and then start your business. You can make a website also to take some online orders so that it will increase your popularity in the cyber-world.
You should have good amount of employees under your arms so that you can run business successfully. There are other factors also which are also equally important.
For ex.
1.Money(in terms of investment).
2.Place where you will be placing you business.
3.Facilities you will be providing to your customer.
4.Business strategies to enhance your business, etc.
Best of luck for your food business :)

My guess is he wants to start a retail outlet, perhaps a restaurant. In that case considering that he admits he is unexperienced the best plan for him would be to buy into a franchise such as subway or McDonalds where the running of the business is very very simple because you just run/own a branch office while corporate headquarters has preplanned the business model for you. You can also hire people who have worked in a Subway, Burger King etc to run the new restaurant. Otherwise just starting your own unbranded restaurant from scratch might not work that smoothly.

Food business always giving a good return if you manage them properly..if you don't have any experience i would suggest that you should consider franchise business as the franchisor would give you advise how to start your business and intensive course is provided to provide you with in depth exposure. Just look what is available in your country and you must have enough capital to start with.
