Hello.
One of the best and most inexpensive ways to market your business locally is by word of mouth. Word spreads fast and this can be beneficial for freelancers who are trying to gain new clients and increase their popularity.Another way to get the word out regarding your freelance business in your local area is to take advantage of free local magazines/newspapers available in your vicinity.
In your views, which is the best way of offline marketing?

I would say it has to be flyers and attractive brochers. Just get around 1000's of one page flyers made and get them sent along with the daily local newspaper - I can bet you will get many more new clients.

That would depend on the type of product or service that you are marketing. As an example, the best online marketing method for a new brand of confectionary would most probably not be the best method for business software.
kimw1, had you got a particular product or service in mind?

I actually used a very unorthodox method once to get hits to a Tourism website that I was promoting. If you live in a country with no laws against defacing banknotes, take a pencil and write your URL on all your notes, then go and spend them in areas where people you are trying to advertise to go shopping. It's a fact that the average bank note passes through thousands of hands and many of those people become curious and visit your site.

That is a very clever idea Norrad. Unfortunately it is probably illegal in most countries, but it countries where it's not, it could work very well.
Wish I'd thought of it before the recession, I don't have as many banknotes going through my hands now. :)

I have an article at my writers' site on this topic. I think you could adapt some of the ideas there outwith the realm of just books.

I like the banknote idea too, Norrad. :D

There are some useful tips in that post Kay, I like the idea of including a calendar on the back of your business card. Hopefully that would make it useful and recipients would keep it in their wallet.

Most would go to advertise their products in a newspaper but I guess the best way to advertise would still be dependent on what type of product/service you're selling. For myself, I still believe in going where your customers are. If your product is more for young adults, it would be good to go to schools and universities to advertise.
3. Volunteer in your community.
Your article has some very good tips Kay. Thanks for sharing. Volunteering is a good way to promote yourself and/or your business. Aside from that, we should always try to attend every social gathering that we're invited to.

...Volunteering is a good way to promote yourself and/or your business...
It can also be a good way to build your portfolio. For example web designers, who build websites free of charge, for local charities.
