View Full Version : How fast is your web connection?

Fergal
Mon 15th Jun 2009, 16:38
I've just run a test of my Internet connection speed at http://www.speedtest.net/. You can view my results below. I'm pretty happy with the speed I'm getting and I'd like to see what speeds other members, from around the world are getting. Please reply and let us know.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/496251854.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I'm in Ireland and my ISP charge is close to €40 per month.

When replying, please tell us what country you are in and how much your ISP is costing you per month, but only if you don't mind.

Damn Fergal, I want your internet connection. I use my apartment building wifi and I get the following results:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/497496437.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I'm not complaining though, it only costs me about $8 a month for the connection.

$8 a month with that connection? Look at mine. The speed is almost half as yours but I'm paying at least $20 a month... Is your connection unlimited?

Fergal

Thanks guys, I appreciate my connection all the more now, but it does cost me about €40 per month. If we get some responses from members in the States they will probably make my connection look slow.

I've just made an addition to my original post, when replying please tell us what country you are located in and approx how much your ISP costs per month.

It's unlimited and unshaped. I can download anything I want at full speed. It does get a bit slow at peak time though.

I am happy with it. I pay about $20 per month for unlimited broadband connection.

Here's mine. The speed was supposed to be for a 8mbps unlimited broadband plan but it never reaches that speed even though my hubby already secured our wireless connection. The speed below was when I was the only one logged on to the internet. Planning on changing ISP provider when our contract ends next year.

From the looks of it, it is just a dial-up connection.
Am I right?

Trust me in that, I have sometimes a speed of an internet that can be very slow related to others. My speed varies (only for first 13 days app.) from 512 KB to 786 KB, but at the end of the month will be very slow and crappy.

Wed 8th Jul 2009, 08:21
Scifi, have you tried different browsers to test which one runs fastest for you? Have you tweaked your browser in any way, to speed up your web browsing?

Mynameis... feel free to post your results from http://www.speedtest.net/. You can post it more than once and then look back to see how your ISP is performing at different times of the day and month.

That sounds very expensive based on the speeds you are getting, have you shopped around to see if there is anyone else who can give you a faster connection for a lower cost.

Mynameis...
Thu 9th Jul 2009, 12:09
Well, actually Fergal I didn't find less costly service. In my country, there are other ISPs that give the same kind of service (with the same download/upload speed & quotta limit for the down/up) for the same price. This is DSL so I guess that's why it's expensive. But, what should I do! There is not other option. We will stick to that.
BTW Fergal how much do you pay for your internet speed?
Thanks.

Norrad

What country are you from Mynameis...? Back in SA I had the same problem.

Fergal

...But, what should I do! There is not other option. We will stick to that....

What web browser do you use? It might help to try a few different browsers to find the one that runs fastest for you. Have you looked at any ways to tweak your browser so that it runs as fast as possible.

...BTW Fergal how much do you pay for your internet speed?...

My ISP cost is €40 (equivalent to $56) per month so it is quite expensive. I could get a cheaper package but the connection speed would be lower. Plus Digiweb (http://www.digiweb.ie) are based in my home town and they've created lots of jobs here so I'm very happy to use them.

Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome) runs much faster for me, than Firefox. You might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.

You might also find these 9 Steps to Speed Up Broadband Firefox Browsing (http://blog.brainstormbrand.com/productivity/2007/04/9-steps-to-speed-upbroadband-firefox-browsing) helpful, originally posted by Nazreen (http://www.businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?t=1517&highlight=firefox&page=3).

Very nice download speed there, upload speed is not very important unless you send large files. I'm sure with that speed that you could stream high quality movies without any buffering.

Thanks Fergal. There is competition in my city and neighborhood between AT&T and Time Warner, so I get a pretty good deal on Internet and cable TV. I pay $85 / mo. combined for the internet and cable package (package includes HD channels also. :) )

Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome) runs much faster for me, than Firefox. You might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.

The new version of Firefox, 3.5, is faster for me. Both in startup time and while using it to browse sites. Check out the new version for yourself, too, to see if it performs better than Chrome for you.

Thanks Norrad. I don't have any trouble viewing movies. When I had a Netflix account, on our laptop we could watch movies or TV episodes from Netflix at any location in our house. Was a pretty good setup! But don't have enough time to watch movies anymore, so we cancelled our Netlix account. :(

I normally get prompted when Firefox updates are available but that didn't happen this time, so I had to request an update through the Firefox Help menu. I'm upgrading to the latest version now and I'll report back when I've used it a bit and let you know if it runs faster than Chrome. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have not tweaked my browser ever because to be frank I was not even aware of this feature..thanks for letting me a little bit awareness about it..

Fergal
Mon 13th Jul 2009, 08:03
Scifi, tweaking your browser will not improve your upload and download speeds as shown in the test results, because these speeds are determined by your ISP. However, tweaking your browser may allow you to browse the Internet faster, with the speeds you have. In other words websites should display quicker for you. Have you noticed any change in that?

scifi
Mon 13th Jul 2009, 11:31
ok, now ..I got it clear...Yeah some improvement in the browsing speed can be sense by me...However, in case of pages like yahoo & gmail , there is no improvement but other pages which use to take time before are showing better results after tweaking my browser!!!:)

I couldn't use the site to test out my speed. Will it because i am running my test behind the router? I am currently using an internet sharing router, i think i may have to make it direct only can find out the speed, but i guess it won't be fast.

This speed test system is wrong. It shows much more speed than you actually get in your internet connection. I got the proof today when I tested it in my office. I have never been able to download a file in my office at more than 250KBPS speed. But this test shows my office internet speed as 1.27 MBPS. This speed is unimaginable in my country whosoever the individual is or whatsoever the institution is!
