View Full Version : Made Redundant!

Unfortunately I was made redundant, just over a week ago. My job for the last four years was in a management position with an Irish property and construction firm. The industry has taken a severe hammering in recent times and I now find myself out of work.
Fortunately I have some resources to keep myself for at least a couple of months and I plan on using this time to improve my knowledge of online business and to focus almost exclusively on building Business Advice Forum.
Being made redundant is not a nice experience, thankfully this is the first time it has happened to me and all going well it will be the last. For the moment I'm concentrating on the positive. I hope that losing my job will give me the humility to empathize with other people's problems and the opportunity to help build Business Advice Forum to being the largest and most helpful personal success and business forum on the Internet.
I've previously posted about my goals for Business Advice Forum here (http://www.businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?t=2768).

Oh no, Fergal!! I am so sorry to hear that. Please, if you want to talk with someone that's been there even just to vent about it, IM me (it's in my profile) or email or I can meet you in my chat. Anytime at all, just holler at me. I'm almost always online. That sucks...stay strong, my friend.
Anything I can do to help, just ask.

Thanks for your kind thoughts Kay and your offer to help.
Honestly all is well, I've had excellent support from friends and family and I view the whole thing as a challenge and an opportunity. That's not to say that I haven't found it difficult at times, but I'm putting it behind me and moving forward. What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.
Onwards and upwards! :)

Sorry to hear that too Fergal. It is really scary to be made redundant and a lot of people share your fears including me. I'm actually at a loss for words. Anyway, stay strong and don't give up.

Thanks Pendelton and Nazreen, very kind of you both. I have my health and my family are healthy, I won't be going hungry in the near future, so the truth is I'm very fortunate.

Ouch, that's probably my biggest fear during these tough times, I'm pretty lucky that my boss loves me. Atleast it gave you time to start this forum, every cloud has a silver lining.

Unfortunately your boss loving you isn't any guarantee when it comes to redundancy, Norrad. Mine did too and it still happened to me. I left another job after he headhunted me to take that one on, only to find myself redundant less than a year later because the company had a "last in, first out" policy and I was one of the last in.
I'd actually worked there before which was why he asked me to come back for the new role, but my previous service didn't count. He was very upset but his hands were tied by that policy. The point of the story is keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities both online and off and don't put your eggs all in one basket.
Fergal, you're right. Having your health is so important! And you have a fantastic site here.
Sometimes an event like this reminds us of what to be thankful for. You'll learn through this experience. I found it also showed me who I could count on and you know what, the ones who were weren't the ones I would have imagined would be...and unfortunately some I thought would be were not. I found out who really did have my best interests at heart. Many people I hardly knew gave of themselves and supported me at that time with encouragement and practical advice with no thought of getting back anything. It amazed me and now I try do the same when I can for anyone in a similar situation.

I'm so sorry to hear that. If there's one thing I could say to you that would be, "everything happens for a reason and if a door closed, more windows will open up for you." Just believe that God will make a way and never stop believing in yourself. Knowing you, it won't be long before you find yourself achieving more than you have achieved before. All the best!

Thanks Kay, I've already had similar experiences and been positively surprised at how willing some people are to give their support and encouragement.
