Global average Internet connection speed is 1.5 Mbps & above all at the end of 2008, approximately 19 per cent Internet connections around the world were at speeds greater than 5 Mbps -- a 21 per cent increase over the average global connection speed at the end of 2007.

I was surprised to see that India ranked so low down on the list. I would have thought that at the rate India is churning out IT graduates and their focus on IT industries that they would have had a better broadband infrastructure. Unfortunately Ireland is not doing as well as we should either.

1. South Korea: 15 Mbps: 69%
2. Japan: 7 Mbps: 54%
3. Hong Kong: 6.9 Mbps: 38%
4. Romania: 5.7 Mbps: 45%
5. Sweden: 5.6Mbps: 39%
6. Switzerland: 5 Mbps:
7. Netherlands: 4.9 Mbps: 28%
8. Belgioum: 4.7 Mbps: 31%
9. Slovakia: 4.5 Mbps
10. Norway: 4.5 Mbps: 38%

Wow! I'm not surprised that South Korea , Japan and Hong Kong are Top 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Whenever I see news of internet gaming, these 3 countries are always on top.

What's even more surprising is that the top industrialized western countries like U.S., G Britain, and others are not in the top 10 of that list.

Yeah, Fergal ..this is the fact despite all the progress made by India in IT sector..We hope with the popularity of 3G services in India which are launched only recently here, Broadband speeds are expected to show some improvement,,,...But the point is that despite lack of A-class broadband infrastructure, India has still made progress in IT sector, utilizing whatever little resources it had in the most efficient way..!!!:D

India also has a lot of companies that do outsourcing like Satyam. So with that in mind, I also would have thought that India should at least be in the top 20 or 30.

Speaking of internet speed, I'm actually a bit frustrated right now. I signed up for 8Mbps broadband but when I tested in Speedtest.net, download speed is only 4.5Mbps.

Do you know what contention ratio you are getting with that broadband Nazreen?

Here in India, I have signed for an Internet connection of 512 kbps & I am getting 75kbps..that is sufficient for me.:D..Moreover I have never surf the internet at a speed of even 1mbps.I am waiting for 3G technology here which holds better future for fast speed internet connections..!!!!:)

I just googled contention ratio and I guess that the reason why our speed is slow is because me and my hubby connect to the internet at the same time. That's silly of me. I'll check the speed again when it's only me that's online. Thanks Fergal!

I really shouldn't complain about my internet speed because it's way faster than the average internet user Scifi. What's the name of that 3G technology that you're referring to?

Both GSM & CDMA technology is upgrading themselves to 3G from current level of 2G...These technologies are used here to provide telecom services...

Hi, I am from Pakistan & I have got 2 MB DSL link which isn't enough for me as I get around 250 KB/sec download speed..

Talking about India, I heard that one of the Indian company i.e Airtel have launched 16 MB/sec internet if i'm not wrong..

One of my friend told me that he have got 100Mb internet link in Ukraine, i was quite surprised to hear that.

Here In Nepal, the Internet connection is slower than India or Pakistan. The worst connection ever you would use. No downloading speed and very slow page surfing speed for clients.

I accept internet connection in India are really bad
i pay around $20 a month for my internet connection
if i have 2mbps speed then get limit of 2.5gb and unlimited 256kbps
i keep changing my planes ....according to my use

no dought we have few unlimited planes for $180 you get 4mbps unlimited ..$90 for 2mbps and $50 for 1mbps

we even have 16mbps speed for $40 but down lode limit of 8gb p/m

what i want is more speed for what we pay

In US for 20 $ you get 4 to 10 mbps unlimited hear we get only 256kbps

it seems within 3 years things are going to get improve hear ..... i even heard of 2 mbps unlimited plane for 5 $

Politicians are very good at promising things during election campaigns. They are not always so good at delivering their promises, once they are elected.

You can view the connection speed of BAF members here (http://www.businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?t=2871).

Absolutely right said Fergal,

I also don't believe that we will see a connection of 2mbps at $5 in India..My only hope was 3G revolution in India....but Govt. has increase the basic price of 3G spectrum too... so hopes of it being shattered ,atleast for time being or so..!!!

Well I'm really surprised about the results, because I didn't notice many european coutries in the first 10 on the list. Being the first three taken by asian countries is really surprising & make me feel honored because I'm from asia.

It's good to see Asian countries featuring so strongly on the list. The proportion of business being done over the web is increasing all the time. People and businesses expect things to work faster and faster and they are less prepared to wait for information. We want it now.

Modern economies will need fast Internet connections in order to develop economically. It's an area Ireland needs to get right and improve on very quickly or we will get left behind.
