Hi Paul and welcome to Business Advice Forum.
The major search engines will find your site all by themselves. The quickest way to get them to notice your new site is to build links from sites that are listed in the search engines, to your site. Then when the spiders visit the existing site they will follow the links to your new site.
You can get some useful info on this topic here on Google (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=34397).

First of all, let me welcome you to our friendly Forum Paulsad.
There were already some discussions and thread on SEO in the forum. An example would be the promotion of Timemachiner (http://www.businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?t=655) and many other threads. Some of the suggestions include choosing the appropriate keywords for your site, writing articles, free directory submission, writing of squidoo lens and many more.

The fastest way to get your website crawl by search engine spider is to
ping your website. Use pingomatic.com or pingoat.com to do this.
Or you can write articles and submit them to article directories
so that spider will crawl to your website through your articles.
Or you can insert links into highly active website.
Hope this helps.

Another quick way to have Google spider your site, is to place Google Adsense ads on it. Google spiders visit every site that displays their ads.

True enough, high PR backlinks are the best. They will even give
your site more credibility in search engine scoring and hence, your
site will rank even higher.
And quality content is what will also help your website for the long
term. As long as your website provides good quality content that
people are looking for, you don't have to worry about search engine. :)

If you ping your site using ping-o-matic or plinger, a spider will come within minutes. Also, you can bookmark your site and that will bring them to your page within about 10 minutes.

Scifi, do you have any suggestions as to good SEO software?
Well Fergal, I have not used the software too much because I consider myself still at the stage of learning since I started it about 1.5 months ago but my friends always recommend me SEO Elite (http://www.seoelite.com/index2.htm).... Chk it out.. I want to know what are your opinions on this..:)

1.5 months?!
I've been in internet marketing for around 1.5 years, maybe even more,
like 2 years. But I'm also still learning and I'm still struggling in making
sales.
Every time when I hear someone who started later than me but created
more results than me, I'll tell myself I'm going to catch up. :D
Keep it up. And thanks for your sharing.
SEO Elite has good review. :)

Thanks for sharing that Scifi, have your friends actually used SEO Elite and have they benefited significantly from it?
Personally I'm not fully convinced of the value of SEO software.

Personally I'm not fully convinced of the value of SEO software.
I also don't have much idea about the right valuation of the software..But as my friend has recommended me many times, I will consider using it some time after four -five months of duration, till then I think I will have fair idea of internet marketing..He is earning a great sum, But he has never told me about how much he had benefited from the software except simply referring it to me..!!!:)
