Ok, Thought someone on here may be able to help me out.

I am starting a Web Design/Graphic Design business. I myself live in NJ. The co-owner lives in Alabama. We have been working on the start of our business for quite a while. (Web site, Business Plan, Marketing Ideas, etc.)

My question is, What type of business license(s) would we need to start on our venture? Would we just need to register the business name and that is all? I've done a lot of research in my state but come up with a lot of dead ends when referring to a web based business. We would like to do work internationally to expand out market and I myself do not plan on staying in the USA myself. Eventually I will be moving to the UK (England) and would like everything to be able to go with me without having to apply for new licenses.

Does anyone have information on this matter? It would be a great help and much appreciated as the search for such information has been a long frustrating path that I would like to get past so we can get business started.

Unfortunately I don't have specific knowledge of the exact legal position in relation to setting up a business in your State. Your post would suggest that you are very serious about your business and that you have already done a lot of work and research on it.

It might be worth taking the time and the expense to meet a lawyer who specialises in this area to go through the legal requirements. Some lawyers may even provide a first consultation free of charge. Or do some research to see if there are free sources of this legal info in your geographic area. For example could you contact a local Chamber of Commerce or Government funded business support service?

Honestly, this is the first time I hear for a web-based business you have to purchase a license and other stuff. If anyone knows more about this topic, please share your knowledge, I want to learn more.

try to contact people already engaged even in small type of web based business, dont try to find contacts on internet. Try to find people around your vicinity say in NJ.. and in NJ you will find a lot of such people. Tyr to contact a lawyer and ask him about the business firm registration process in your country, he will atleast give you some other lawyers phone number who knows a bit more about global registration of your web based businesss. WIsh you good luck.

Well naveen instead of searchin here & there ..go for some govenment sites....

I also share the same opinion that web-based businesses are mostly unregulated and don't require a license Youbetcha.

I went ahead and opened the NJ License & Certification Guide (https://www6.state.nj.us/commerce/CEG_LCI/pdf/liccert.pdf) that Kay has provided. I didn't see anything pertaining to Permit, Licensing or Certification for e-businesses or web-base businesses.

There is no license for that type of activity, at least they haven't come up with one yet. Simply form a company, possibly a Delaware/Nevada/Wyoming LLC, with you and your partner as members.

Later on when you move you can operate from abroad using Certified Copy of your Articles of Organization with Apostille (http://www.myusacorporation.com/apostille.html) (click on the link to read what that is and how it can help you do business abroad).

Its all actually much easier than you think it is :)
