You might find this link building article (http://www.komarketingassociates.com/blog/30-old-ways-to-gain-new-links-for-2009/) useful, if you want to build links to your site.

Any other suggestions on how to build links?

2. Add your web address to your LinkedIn Profile

I think that for tip# 2, other Social Networking sites like Myspace, Friendster and Multiply should also be included there.

I've read before that aside from those 30 tips, you can also try submitting your site in free web directories and also advertising in PPC sites.

Nice list Fergal, thanks! You can also add your links to any personalized My Yahoo/MSN homepage you have in the Favorite Links section. Better yet, add an RSS feed link from your blog/site if you have one too. Then every time you load your customized page, the Yahoo/MSN bots go looking to see if there's fresh posts to generate for the feed.

Excellent list. You can also create a page via your Google profile and put your RSS feed into it. Another thing, don't forget Yahoo groups and various list serves, some of which are hosted on .edu sites for quality links that are in your niche.

15. Run a contest
16. Sponsor an event

Running a contest/s and sponsoring events are a good way to build traffic and links to your site Scifi. This is especially true when you've just launched your website. Running a contest and sponsoring an event are forms of viral marketing wherein your existing or current visitors and members will tell their friends and even write about your site on their blogs.

Contests and events are two of the best viral marketing techniques because you'll be taking advantage of a very powerful human motivation - Greed. :)

Some of those are funny.

Seriously though. There are two type of back links.

One is the standard anchor text to drive traffic and is used for SEO, the other is strictly for SEO link popularity.
