Actually I should be asking "anyone using Twitter (http://twitter.com/) effectively?" Nazreen's thread on sharpening your ax (http://www.businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?p=8891) reminded me.

I like to think I try keep up with the times but I just can't get the hang of how it works! It's supposed to be great for networking and attracting traffic but I must be missing something somewhere. Can anyone tell me please:

a)Where are the groups?

b) How do you find people interested in what you are apart from just tripping over them while you're wandering aimlessly around or catching them on the main page? (meaning is there some systematic approach)

c) Is there no way to scroll back and see what went before the current posts on the home page?

I have, Fergal, back in mid September. So far all I've done really is find new people by looking at who other people are following but that's hit or miss. Most writers for example have links to other writers and publishers they're following which is what I'm interested in, but then I'm only finding who they like.

Once you mark them as following, you see all their Twitters when you log in and can reply to them. If you look at mine, http://twitter.com/kayelizabeth, you'll see where I've done that. I've also posted a few links to articles at The Cuckleburr Times, which is allowed. But the whole set up feels very slap dash. Even using the help, I couldn't navigate and I spent a good amount of time there trying to work it out.

On the plus side, Darren Rowse of Problogger fame has started a brand new site called TwiTip (http://www.twitip.com/) where he'll be building a blog from scratch focusing on Twitter. I'm pinning my hopes on him shedding some light and already signed up for his Feedburner.

LOL, you know, they could have chosen a better word that "following". It sounds too much like stalking to me. Even "observing" would have been better.

Hey, nice to put a face to you too, Fergal! :) I've added you to my "following" list as well.

There's also by the way a social networking site for Twitter users called Twellow (http://www.twellow.com/). I signed up for it once I joined Twitter and it's really the kind of thing I expected Twitter to have but it's not run by them.

You claim your Twitter profile then add more info if you wish then list yourself in the appropriate category or categories.

eg mine is under Publishing>Authors and Writers and Small Business>Freelance. I've seen some who list themselves in as many as 11 categories so I don't know if there's restrictions on how many you can but that's pretty generous in my book.

This is what I was looking for at Twitter and am yet to find - groups of people interested in the same things as you are or working in the same industry. It also shows their last Tweet in their profile or you can hit View Latest to see more.

You just sign up and claim your profile as I say. It's free and seems like a good idea to me! I'm yet to explore it thoroughly but I bet it could be very useful indeed. :)

I know, Fergal, it seems nuts to me. Of course it could be that they do have the features in some shape or form and I've just not discovered where or how yet but I honestly don't think so.

I read about another add-on today that sounds useful as well called Tweetlater (http://www.tweetlater.com/), where you can write Tweets and schedule them to post at some future time. I like that function with Wordpress for the blog entries so will probably give this one a whirl as well.

I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to be spending a lot of time these days organising my organising! :rolleyes::D

Silent, how are you finding it, have you used it much yet?

Ain't much active there, don't tweet much, if at all. However, social networking sites are vastly becoming a wonderful tool for promotion of your websites. Actually, the whole micro blogging idea was a good one!

It needs more characters. I always run out! :D I spend more time trying to fit in what I want to say than anything. I know, I know.. it wouldn't be micro if there was more. I'll add you too Swastik.

I thought this Twitip article about a site called hashtags was interesting. It allows you to create groups and target your messages to them more specifically.

Thanks Kay, the article is back up. Please keep the suggestions coming on how to better use Twitter. I've got to a stage where I'm following quite a few people and there is just too much stuff to read every day.

Will do. I know, it's hard to keep on top of it all, isn't it! I subscribe to the Feedburner notifications for Twitip so I get the posts by email daily. That way I don't miss anything. If I had to count on me going there every day, it wouldn't happen.

Hi All,

I am a Twitter freak - but just don't get it how ppl get thousands of followers there ? Is there a black hat secret to it or what ? Can someone help me to get more followers on Twitter - My aim is to get 3000+ followers on Twitter with help of BAF. Is there a way to mass follow on Twitter ? Like I used to do a search of people who would interest me like - writers, and then click on follow buttons besides their names = That feature seems to be removed now and I got to click on each profile to follow :( Makes it slow. Any other way ?

You should be careful with mass following people Jo. Twitter doesn't look too kindly on it and I've heard that they banned some accounts because of it. Plus once you are following 2,000 people, from then on you can only follow about 10% more people than follow you.

For example, to follow 3,300 people you would need to have about 3,000 people following you. Or to put it another way, if you are following 2,000 people but only have 1,000 followers, you won't be able to follow anyone else until you yourself get a lot more followers.

If you do decide to mass follow have a look at Twitter Karma (http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/), http://flashtweet.com/ & http://twollow.com/. I advise using these services with caution, for the reasons I mentioned above.

Try using a software like hummingbird that will automate everything for you.
I usually get 500-700 new followers a day.
A little pricey, but worth every penny.

I second what Fergal says about using automation when it comes to following. There have been a lot of people losing their accounts by using various mass follow programs. I find that I pick up followers almost daily and that's with not even doing anything lately...lol. I follow people that frequent the forums I enjoy and have also searched by interest at Twitter and added people that tweet about things I want to hear about.

I was already following Fergal but I just followed both jo and mike, too. My twitter is @TinaGolden if you care to follow me back.
