May I know how blackle can help save electricity while searching. It doesn't say anything in the website on how this is done. At the time of writing this post, it says in their website that they've already saved 769,638.131 watt hours.

How is Blackle saving energy?
Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.
How can you help?
We encourage you to set Blackle as your home page. This way every time you load your Internet browser you will save a little bit of energy. Remember every bit counts! You will also be reminded about the need to save energy each time you see the Blackle page load.
Help us spread the word about Blackle by telling your friends and family to set it as their home page. If you have a blog then give us a mention. Or put the following text in your email signature: "Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".
Have a look at our energy saving tips page for ideas on steps you can take to save energy.
There are a lot of great web sites about saving energy and being more environmentally friendly. They are full of great tips covering the little things that we can all do to make a difference today. Try Blackling "energy saving tips" or visit one of the many great blogs dedicated to environmental awareness.

When Google went black for a day to promote awareness of energy conservation and to promote Earth Day they wrote this on their website;
As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display.Further info here (http://www.google.ie/intl/en_ie/earthhour/).
What an excellent concept though to promote awareness and viral marketing of a very simple site. Here we are discussing it, and it has been discussed all over the web on various forums and blogs.
Other sites did it but Blackle were the first to get decent publicity and word of mouth marketing. It's probably much too late for anyone to successfully copy the concept now.
Reminds me of the milliondollarhomepage (http://milliondollarhomepage.com) and their use of viral marketing, many copied but this guy was first and the only one to make a million from the concept.

Due to my basic physical knowledge I have some doubts this thing saves energy.
Common TFT Flatscreen Monitors have a back lighting on all the time. This part of the monitor consumes most of its energy.
The transistors openeing and closening to display colors in front of it only use a minor part of the energy.
But there is a hint. This Robertson guy gave his statement in 2002, when most people still used CRTs.
Google probably just kept this site alive out of convenience.
By the way I know a way to save even more energy. Shut Your computer down. Just kidding ;)

There are around 18 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is wwwdotcleanblackdotcom. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to wwwdotcleanblackdotcom/theme/

Welcome to Business Advice Forum Earth018. http://www.cleanblack.com certainly provides a good range of themes against a black background. My preference is for the default one.
