Which sport represents your country's best chance of winning a medal in the Olympics?
For Ireland it is most probably boxing. We have five boxers at the games. Some of them have received a "by" for the first round, which means they automatically progress to the second round. These boxers need to win just two fights to be guaranteed a medal.

For Singapore, our best bet is in women's table tennis. Our women paddlers are also ranked in the top 10 in the world. They're also born in China though.

i am from india.
Truly speaking i don't think that india will win any medal in olympics. It is not that i don't like my country but...........
I am a straight forward person and wrote what i felt.
India is not good at other games except cricket and nowadays in cricket also india is becoming weak.
If luck favours india than i think india will win a medal in shooting.

India has such a vast population of 100+ crore but out of these there is no body who can win a gold medal, its strange. India's population is very large as compared to other countries who have participated in olympics yet india is unable to get a medal why?
I think its because corruption. In india corruption is at its height and i think only those sportspersons who have money or a from a good place or strong political support are allowed to participate in good sports competition and no one pays attention on others.
That is why india is not able to get a medal in olympics (this i think).
If attention is paid to others also then i am sure india will win gold medal in every single game at olympic.
This is the reason why i think india will not win this time also because i think good ones r again left behind.

How can an athlete be ignored if they are winning? If someone is winning would they not have the same chance of progressing as everyone else?

yes it is true and sad but in india every thing is possible.
for example i am a very good cricket player yet i am ignored in my previous school only because my seniors pick up a team which include his friends.
sorry for my english

Today, Tao Li of Singapore takes 5th place in women's 100m butterfly finals. Even though she didn't get a medal, I'm still proud of her for reaching the finals and doing her best for our country.

Sorry i was wrong.
Hey fergal, you said "How can an athlete be ignored if they are winning? If someone is winning would they not have the same chance of progressing as everyone else?"
but in india everything is possible. It doesn't matter how good you r the only thing which matters is money. If you r poor but you want to be in international sports competitions
then you'll have to be xtra xtra xtra .......... ordinary.
But still i love my country.

I'm delighted to hear that India has won a gold medal, what a fantastic achievement, especially after so many years waiting. Thanks for the explanations of how sport in India operates.
As Nazreen suggests we should all be proud of our Olympic athletes even when they don't win medals. To represent your country at the Olympics is in itself a fantastic achievement.

I guess the next medal for India should be in the BOXING arena. Three of our boxers have made it to the Quarter finals, one even defeated the World Champion from Russia.

Sorry abadie, the match between Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan of China was very one-sided. It seemed that LCW was totally outclassed by Lin Dan. Anyway, congrats to LCW for winning the silver.
Our women paddlers were also totally outclassed by China in the women's table tennis team event. Even though it's just a silver, I'm still proud of them because this is Singapore's first medal in 48 years in the Olympics.

Two Irish boxers have made it to the semi-finals and are guaranteed medals. At least our athletes won't be going home empty handed.
Im just concerned about basketball for the US...I hope they keep up the pace here.
I watched them play against Spain on Saturday, they look extremely formidable and I'm sure that there aren't any teams that fancy their chances of beating them.

I think that for the U.S. basketball team, otherwise known as the Dream Team (others are calling them the Redeem Team) are trying very hard to get gold because of what they consider as a pathetic bronze medal they got in Athens 2004 games.
I also think that this team is already very formidable and they're winning every time with ease and a very big margin of more that 30 points for each win. I don't think they'll lose but anything's possible. Just look at the Brazil men's soccer team which are the current world champions, they lost to Argentina because they self-destruct.

In the Olympics, we're always talking about athletes winning gold medals and breaking world and Olympic records but there is one lady who didn't win any medals or break any records but is now one of the most talked about athlete today. She is non other than, Natalie du Toit.
She doesn't need to win any medals or break world records because she's already won her way to the hearts of a lot of people in the world, especially those who watched her swim 10 km to finish 16th in that Olympics event. You see, she only has 3 limbs but she has one BIG heart.

Swastik, there are lots of different weight divisions in boxing, so there are a lot more than four boxers in the semi-finals. More here (http://en.beijing2008.cn/sports/boxing/index.shtml).

Welcome to the Business Advice Forum Layla.
Yes, we can take inspiration from all athletes like Natalie du Toit. Nowadays, people are just concerned about the medals. We should all be proud of all of our athletes because they have done their best in the games. They also put in a lot of effort, months and years of it, and sacrifice just so that they can represent our respective countries.
