If you want the most popular websites regarding a subject, just type it in in Google and you will get the answer by the entire list of links you receive...
If you want the most popular websites ranked by country, I can refer you to http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_500 where you can select a country, and then see the top-100 of that country. On the same website, you can also look for the world's top-500, so no matter what subject, no matter what country they are from. Search engines and social networks seem to end up really high.

I vouch for Alexa as being the most accurate site to find website popularity. There are a couple other sites out there like Compete.com and Quantcast.com that give you rankings but Alexa is still the best and some advertisers will even use this ranking as a determination of whether or not to accept you to their network.

It depends upon user preference. There are many ways to find the popular sites. You can check social bookmarking sites, alexa ranking, complete ranking, Searching in SE for specific keyword, etc.

Hmmm, Alexa shows adult sites.

Try also downloading and installing Google Toolbar, and Alexa Sparky. It will show you valuable information about sites.

Google toolbar shows the importance of each site in their Pagerank. Really a valuable tool if you need to know if a website is indexed well and has quality backlinks.

whats the problem with adult sites?
if you are not adult or if you dont wish to go to adult sites, simply dont click on the links wich seems to be adult site.and google provides good and popular info.so ithink there should be no problem with google search.

On this question I would probably go with Alexa.com. But social bookmarking sites are good too. I haven't even knew that sites like these existed. Thanks for sharing this information with us falguni1.
